Hike, Bike and Kayak in Whiteshell Provincial Park, MB

Soldier On will conduct the Hike, Bike and Kayak” event at Caddy Lake Resort in the Whiteshell Provincial Park, MB on June 20-24. This event will bring together both serving and retired ill/injured CAF members, allowing participants to connect through peer support and encourage an active and healthy lifestyle.

It will provide an opportunity for Soldier On participants to be introduced to the sports of hiking, trail biking and kayaking. Participants will receive introductory-level instruction on all three sports and will have an opportunity to hike-bike-kayak this area of the beautiful Whiteshell Provincial Park. 
 
This is open only to registered Solder On serving or retired members in the Prairie Region (MB, SK and North-west ON). There is no cost and assistance is provided in registration and filling out the waiver if requested. Travel assistance will be provided to those participants residing in SK and North-west ON. Participants from MB will be reimbursed costs for travelling to and from their pick-up point.

Regardless of the current skill level, participants will receive lessons on hiking techniques, to include proper warm-up and cool-down and type of clothing & footwear and knowledge of the local flora and fauna. Participants will also receive instruction on basic maintenance requirements for a trail bike and trail bike riding techniques.
 
Last but not least, participants will be introduced to kayaking to include general safety, paddling & maneuver techniques for a single-person kayak. The tandem kayak will also be discussed and demonstrated but will not be used for the afternoon “tunnel paddle”. All necessary equipment for each event will be provided to all participants. 
 
Instruction and mentoring for each activity will be provided as follows: June 20
  • 4 p.m.: All participants have arrived at Caddy Lake Resort;
  • 5 p.m.: Welcome & Event Overview Briefing;
  • 6 p.m.: Dinner at Hi-Point Restaurant; and
  • 7:30 p.m.: Activity (TBC) and/or free time.
June 21
  • 7:30 a.m.: Breakfast at Hi-Point Restaurant;
  • 9 a.m.: Introduction to Hiking;
  • noon: Lunch at Caddy Lake Resort;
  • 1 p.m.: Introduction to Biking;
  • 6 p.m.: Dinner at High Point Restaurant; and
  • 7:30 p.m.: Activity (TBC) and/or free time.
June 22
  • 7:30 a.m.: Breakfast at H-Point Restaurant;
  • 9 a.m.: Hike - Blue Highway Trails;
  • noon: Lunch at Caddy Lake Resort;
  • 1 a.m.: Bike - Blue Highway Trails and Challenge Course;
  • 6 p.m.: Dinner at High Point Restaurant; and
  • 7:30 p.m.: Activity (TBC) and/or free time.
June 23
  • 7:30 a.m.: Breakfast at High Point Restaurant;
  • 9 a.m.: Kayak (single & tandem); Short Paddle;
  • noon: Lunch at Caddy Lake Resort;
  • 1 p.m.: Kayak – “Tunnel Paddle”;
  • 6 p.m.: Steak Barbeque or dinner at High Point Restaurant (TBC); and
  • 7:30 p.m.: Activity (TBC) and/or free time.
June 24
  • 7 a.m.: Wake up, Pack up, Clean up;
  • 8 a.m.: Breakfast at High Point Restaurant; and
  • 9 a.m.: Depart for home locations.
The number of Soldier On participants is limited to six (6).
 
Minimum eligibility criteria
Any serving member or veteran of the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) from the Prairie Region (NW ON, MB, SK) who acquired a permanent physical or mental health illness or injury while enrolled as a member of the CAF; whether attributable or not to service.
 
Serving Members
Medical clearance may be required by your chain of command. 
 
Mental & Physical Requirements
  • Participants must be able to tolerate up to eight (8) hours of moderate to high paced activities for three consecutive days.
    • Due to the busy activity schedule, applicants must have a limited requirement for rest throughout the day. 
  • Participants are advised that this event will be held mostly outdoors, and weather conditions can change quickly in the Whiteshell area.
    • Participants are expected to dress accordingly for the weather conditions.
    • Personal Floatation Devices will be used at all times while on the water. 
  • Participants will be joined with other ill/injured members and civilians, and therefore should be able to function in a social environment. 
  • Participants also acknowledge that there will be no alcohol allowed during the daily activities, and they will be required to share accommodations.
Nomination Forms must be received by Soldier On no later than the 9th of June, 2022.
